A Morrisville man will serve one to five years in jail for
assaulting his girlfriend and forcing her to take a harrowing ride
as he tried to elude police.
Kane Plante Jr., 22, pleaded guilty Dec. 18 in Lamoille Superior
Court to domestic assault and attempting to elude police. Under a
plea agreement, charges of unlawful restraint, careless or
negligent driving, providing false information to police, and
violating conditions of release were dropped.
Plante admitted kicking and punching his girlfriend, Tristen
Goodwin Hicks, on July 8 after an argument at Pine Crest Trailer
Park. Afterwards, he forced her into the back seat of her Subaru
Forester and sped down Golf Course Road, where Morristown police
officer Scott McCollough saw the car run a stop sign. McCollough
tried to stop the car, but it sped up curvy, unpaved Goetz Road at
speeds of up to 60 mph, according to court records.
When the car stopped at the end of Goetz Road, Hicks was in the
driver’s seat, and said she had been driving. Plante told
McCollough he had ordered Hicks to elude police because he was
afraid that neighbors may have reported their argument.
Plante, who is prohibited from drinking alcohol under the
conditions of a previous conviction, registered a blood-alcohol
level of 0.099, above the .08 considered legal proof of
intoxication.
Hicks and Plante were questioned at the Morristown police
station and later released.
However, after watching a tape of the pursuit, captured by a
camera in his police car, McCollough saw that Hicks had been
sitting in the back seat, and switched places with Plante just
after the car stopped.
When he questioned Hicks, she admitted she had pretended to be
the driver to protect Plante.
The judge banned Plante from contacting Hicks, and ordered him
to spend 24 months on probation after he gets out of prison.
