Alex Pelletier, Stowe High School Class of 2019, and Alexis Chickanosky, Mt. Abraham High School Class of 2017, were selected to be the Vermont representatives for Students Against Destructive Decisions (SADD).
Along with 35 students nationwide, Pelletier and Chickanosky spent last week in Washington, D.C., participating in the SADD Students for Policy, Education, Advocacy & Knowledge program.
They were involved with SADD’s Congressional briefing, spent a day with the National Transportation and Safety Board, and met with U.S. Sen Patrick Leahy and the staff of U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders and Congressman Peter Welch to discuss policy regarding safe driving for teens.
This year, Pelletier will work to develop a local SADD chapter so that Stowe High School can tap into the resources and expertise of the organization, which has thousands of chapters across the country. Independent studies have shown that students in schools with an established SADD chapter are more aware of and informed about the risks of underage drinking, other drug use and impaired driving.
