If you plan to do any open burning in Stowe this year, you need a local burn permit.
Vermont requires a burn permit to burn leaves brush, dead wood, tree cuttings and weeds.
In addition, it is illegal to burn any treated, painted, pressed or finished wood, plywood, paper, cardboard, plastics, tires, garbage, tarpaper, household trash and asphalt shingles.
It is against the law to burn anything other than natural, un-processed items. Natural un-treated processed wood can be burned with an approved permit from the Vermont Agency of Natural Resources by contacting John Wakefield 802-279-5674. A local Stowe permit is still required with proof of the state permit.
Permits will be issued at Arandas Citgo (formally Stowe Quick Mart), located in the lower village on South Main Street. They will be issued between the hours of 5:30 and 10:30 a.m., Monday through Friday, and 7 and 10: 30 a.m. on Saturday and Sunday.
Permits are only valid for one day (the day of the burn); a new permit must be attained for each day of burning.
All permits should be filled out with the correct information and a copy must remain at the burn site. No fires should be left unattended, and they must be extinguished by 6 p.m.
Any questions can be referred to fire warden Scott Reeves at 802-839-6045.
